Shoaib A. Goraya

Shoaib A. Goraya

Biography

Shoaib Ahmad Goraya is a PhD candidate in the Computational Mechanics group of Professor Arif Masud at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His research is focused on computational methods for nonlinear partial differential equations. He develops numerical methods to simulate physical and biological processes that span a spectrum of spatial, material, and temporal scales, and thus require simulation tools that are mathematically rigorous and computationally robust. The fundamental nature of these methods makes them well-suited for application in precision medicine, multiphase flows, smart and sustainable infrastructure, and energy efficient engineering systems.

During his doctoral research, Shoaib has actively worked in developing (i) a stabilized finite element method for modeling spatiotemporal dynamics of drug-coated nanoparticles in blood vessels and their uptake at the target tissue sites, (ii) a data-driven method for embedding computational intelligence in discrepancy modeling of physical systems, (iii) an interface-capturing method for simulating multiphase flows, (iv) a physics informed neural network for thermofluids, and (v) large eddy simulations of turbulent flows. By leveraging high performance computing, these methods are becoming increasingly important frontier of computational mechanics as the complexity and multi-disciplinary nature of scientific problems grows.
